Cherohala Skyway
A National Scenic Byway

This is a breathtaking motorcycle run to do. It takes two to three hours to ride depending on traffic. Cherohala Skyway opened on 10/12/1996 and cost over 100 million to build. It is a little over 50 miles long with many spectacular scenic overlooks. Some of the overlooks are:
  • Shute Cove, 3550 ft
  • Obadiah Overlook
  • Santeetlah Overlook, 5390 ft (highest elevation)
  • Big Junction, 5240 ft
  • Haw Knob Slopes, 4890 ft
  • Stratton Meadows, 4320 ft
  • Hoopers Bald, 5290 ft
  • Spirit Ridge
  • Beach Gap, 4490 ft
  • Between East and West Rattlesnake Rock, 4110 ft
  • Bushy Ridge, 3750 ft
  • Turkey Creek Overlook, 2630 ft
The Cherohala Skyway crosses through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forest and that is how it got its name: Chero, from Cherokee, and hala, from Nantahala. There are several rest area facilities but no stores at all. There is NO gasoline stations either. You must bring whatever your needs may be with you and you should always remember it is approximately 20 degrees cooler at the higher elevations.

Directions from our store:
  • Take 19/74 North/East for approximately 9.7 miles
  • Turn left across the creek onto 129 and follow it into Robbinville
  • Follow the signs for "Cherohala Skyway"
